Tradition Six, much like all the traditions, was created as a result of early experiences in the fellowship. Our early brothers and sisters in A.A. felt that if we had the answer to solve our addiction why not throw the solution behind as many issues as possible. We thought if we can be so happy in this world why not try to transform the entire world by attacking as many issues as possible and share our way of life with everyone. So we opened hospitals, schools, even entered politics. Guess what, it did not work. We quickly realized that we cannot be all things to all men, nor should we try. It was then that we realized that we cannot lend the A.A. name to any cause other than our own. Thankfully this tradition has been handed over to us in SAA. However, in carrying the message of recovery, we often come in contact with other organizations such as treatment centers or healthcare facilities and working with them can play an important role in our recovery as long we keep proper boundaries and not let them take us away from our primary purpose which is to carry the SAA message. I still interact with my treatment center and very often bring newcomers to our meetings. I carry the message of SAA with me when I work with these newcomers and bring them to the meetings so that they can hear the message themselves. In addition, I attend meetings at treatment facilities. It is a great partnership because I am grateful, along with the group, to have the space from the facility to use for our meeting, yet at the same time, it is our SAA meeting and allows us to carry our SAA message. At the same time there are other groups that offer solutions to sexual addiction, however, I know that I need to be careful not to make any public statement about any other group because that would then be considered an endorsement and again would be taking the focus away from the SAA primary purpose of carrying our message. When it comes to money, property and prestige I need to remember that our purpose is neither to make money nor to grow, but these are necessary for us to survive, as long as they remain second to our primary purpose. Likewise prestige fosters differences among us. I need to remember the unity among us and that we need only our Higher Power, the steps and the traditions to sustain us. So Tradition Six is great because it helps to keep the fellowship strong. It is one more way that the fellowship allows me to continue to hear the message and carry the message. |
